I'm struggling to remember the last time two Irish profes- sionals teed up at a women's Major golf championship but that's exactly what's going to happen this week as both Leona Maguire and Stephanie Mead- ow successfully qualified for the $5million event. It's hard to know what expec- tations the pair will place upon their heads this week but even being there representing Ireland will do so much for the women's game at home. The gender gap is closing and it's because of the success of the likes of Leo- na and Stephanie that players like Olivia Mehaffey and Julie McCarthy are leading the next wave of talent coming through. With Jordanstown's Meadow finding form during the final round of the Pure Silk Champi- onship on Sunday, where she signed off with a 67, and Magu- ire already a two-time winner on the Symetra Tour this year, both players will go in with con- fidence in the hopes of making the weekend cut, however, make no mistake about it, this will be a much sterner test than anything they've faced in recent times. If nothing else though, it's heartening to see two blossom- ing talents tee up alongside 156 of the world's best players, and the best thing about it is that we'll be able to follow some of the action on Sky Sports. Let's hope our girls can feature. The men take a backseat this week as Leona Maguire & Stephanie Meadow join the stars of the women's game for the US Women's Open. HERE COME THE GIRLS Stephanie Meadow
