Peter Finnan, on behalf of the team T he names of the 120 men and women who will cre- ate golf history in Rio de Janeiro next month have been ratified with the publication of confirmed places for the Olympic Games competition at Reserva de Marap- endi Golf Course between August 11 and 20. The National Olympic Commit- tees have now entered the athletes who will represent their country for the first Olympic golf compe- tition in 112 years, following the publication last Monday of the Final Olympic Golf Rankings. With no fewer than 41 countries included in the start list for the men's competition from August 11-14, followed by the wom- en's event from August 17-20, the composition of the Olympic fields highlights the broad global diversity of the sport in Rio de Janeiro, representing the ultimate shop-window for the sport and having the capacity to reach a brand new audience, especially among the younger generation across all the continents. Team Ireland had Padraig Har- rington, Seamus Power and Leona MaGuire confirmed last week but the Netherlands declined to enter its two athletes, Christel Boeljon and Anne Van Dam, who both qualified through the women's Olympic Rankings meaning Stephanie Meadow and Maha Haddioui of Morocco complete the 60-strong ladies field. So let's forget about all those who aren't going to be there, focus on the ones who are and hope that our little country can continue to punch above its weight when it comes to interna- tional golf events. Fields confirmed for Olympic Games golf competition IT'S FINAL….WE THINK!
